We LOVE to Read!

O.K. so maybe we love to read the boxes that books come in before we turn them into teepees and eat them!
So? It's still reading to us!

Celebrating Our Friend's First Novel!

Jim Cohee | Mrs. Dalloway's
^^^Way Cool, you Booklovers! Check IT OUT!

Back in 1983, when mom was a wildlife photographer
enroute to live on the Big Island of Hawaii, she stopped
in San Francisco briefly and found herself walking by
the Sierra Club National Headquarters. Being mom,
she marched upstairs and announced to the receptionist,
"I am here to see your photo editor!" as if announcing
the Queen had, at long last, arrived...

Mom don't know much about professional etiquette.

The photo editor, Linda, saw the best in the business,
and even they made appointments. So, when her
receptionist interrupted to tell her, "This you really
gotta see to believe!" she actually saw mom.

Mom has no recollection of what transpired other
than informing Linda that the volcano Kilauea had
just erupted and she would be photographing it
for SIERRA magazine, as she was going there
and they undoubtedly would want a feature on
this explosive volcano!

That was back in early 1983. Mom did go to
Volcanoes National Park and they actually
let her live there as a staff person but had
a very different job in mind for her, which
was to ride horses into the jungle for the
purpose of trapping feral hogs for slaughter,
as they were destroying indigenous vegetation.

Mom loved the "Indiana Jones on Horseback"
part but not the killing part, and also her friends
who had flown over the volcano said you get
sucked into something that makes the little plane
lurch so hard you throw up. She didn't want to
throw up on her camera.

And yet, throughout the ages she and Linda
and her husband Jim, remained close friends,
visiting one another as the Cohees were both
Midwestern expatriates who saw mom when
she lived in Iowa and mom would see them
when visiting San Francisco.

On September 17, 2011, Jim's debut novel
will be celebrated at Mrs. Dalloway's Bookstore
in Berkeley and we invite anyone who lives
in the area to attend. Jim is the former Senior
Editor of Sierra Club Books making his
debut as a fiction novelist with The Swan,
certain to be only the first of many beautiful
novels. We are so excited for them: WHEEEK!

EARTHQUAKE SHOCKS EAST COAST!

OMG! THE DEVASTATING IMAGES HAVE US GLUED TO CNN, MSNBC, (but not FOX)

No, just kidding, we feel your pain. (snicker...) Just that we are due for a 9.0 and with all the water, bridges, 3 active volcanoes, islands, tsunamis, etc. etc. we just don't feel your pain as much as we think you is FUNNY!
Somebody posted this photo from Washington, D.C. and it brought tears
(of laughter) to our eyes.
We feel your pain.
Not really.
Just that the 9.Oh< sorry, forgot to also mention the Hanford Nuclear Plant
where they developed the bombs dropped over Hiroshima and Nagasaki: The BIG ONE scientists (not to be confused with Scientologists) warn us about...mmm, not gonna be quite as funny as yours!
Still...love that picture from the "other" Washington!
And that hurricane heading straight for Maine, where our bestest friend Jerry is taking a birding vacation on an island...betta call him now! Hasta la Vista, you bluebloods!

But I AM ON THE BED!

My Red Pepper! Calvin the small lurves him his treats, ya, I surely do!

WAIT! NO! MOM, GET UP AND DO THINGS FOR US!
Today mom woke up after yesterday's EPIC migraine (but she got a lot of artwork done...don't tell no one but it look CRAZY to us) and today, NO headache! YEAH, SHE GONNA CLEAN OUR CAGES, WE GET TO RUNABOUT, WHAT A MAGNIFICENT DAY TO BE A LITTLE GUINEA PIG, plus lots of treats, what could be better? SQUEEEEE, we all popcorned with joy!

(I get to eat carrots and red pepperZ on mom's bed, too!)

She made a piping hot cup of chai laced with coffee (of course!) and had her gluten-free English muffin after giving us our treats (fresh parsley and red pepper...did I mention I woke her up? Well,  'scuse me but I was ready for breakfast and ya can't keep a small pig waiting!) so she had breakfast and
chai coffee, all according to my plan. Since we all nap after breakfast we were asleep when IT HAPPENED: CAFFEINATED, SHE WENT BACK TO BED TO SLEEP SOME MORE!

It's MY BED! I WOKE MOM UP! WE ALL HAD OUR "EPIC CAVY-DAY" PLANNED, and she bails!

O, Cruel world.

Calvin Discovers an ESCAPE HATCH!

It's a lot of fun runnin' around all over the place but we piggies gots to have our hidin' places, too, y'know, just in case an Andean Eagle flies by! Calvin loves his wooden box (and it looks like somebody been peein' on the top!) but recently discovered the "secret sun-roof" and isn't sure whether to look out, climb out, or just ignore it.
We'll keep you posted.
Don't wait around.
Calvin has a way of changing his mind.
But he fun, ya: we lurves our Calvin the small...and, in this case, he's the only one among us small
enough to actually climb outta HIS hole!

HEAVENLY MT. RAINIER

This is actually a real, "undoctored" photograph of our beloved NW icon, Mt. Rainier, taken by John Meadows when turbulence from the mountain (that makes its own weather) sucked a hole in the clouds hovering above it.

We find it a beautiful, poignant reminder how small our troubles can be if we remember how beautiful life is when we least expect it!

We have not really had a "summer" per se, but have enjoyed our cool weather, being together, all us piggies love being in the bedroom with mom, and although some of us are sick and my back hurts, we are all pretty darn happy! Mom rubs prednisone cream on my ear every day for pain and gives me special attention, combing out my mohawk and telling me how handsome I is! True!

Life is Good in the GuineaHood! How about you?

If Raj and Taj Mahal Only Behaved Like These Two

my sweet guinea pigs - YouTube'

This is a very sweet video featuring well-behaved pigs.
You will never see any of us behaving with courtesy
towards one another: we are committed 'Snatchers!
Somebody got somethin' we WANTS IT even if we
got the same thing, too. Call us Pirates, we doesn't
care, ain't no fun unless you done STOLE THE TREAT
from y'best friend!

Squeaking guinea pigs !!! - YouTube

Squeaking guinea pigs !!! - YouTube

How much they love their "scrunchies!"

POP! Goes the Guinea!

One day while most of the herd was out at once, it excited Raj Mahal to the point of POPCORNING all over the place! MacNutPie watched with interest, yet remained poised with the possibility of an impending FOOD event!
Treats Galore gets MacNutPoppin' so he's savin' it up for the carrots, lettuce,
spinach, yellow bell peppers, carrot-tops, grapes cut in half, a little watermelon wouldn't hurt, and when mom cuts sweet, fresh local blueberries in half he don't mind that, neither. Don't take much to make us piggies happy; it takes EVERYTHING! But when you see us pop, it all be worth it!

Cut our grapes in half. Cut our blueberries in half, too, while y'at it!
Cuz that how we roll, folks, that just how we roll!

Happy Guinea pigs popcorning - YouTube

Happy Guinea pigs popcorning - YouTube

The happiest piggies "Popcorn" when they
are running about and cannot keep so much
joy confined to their tiny bodies. They literally
"POP" into the air in many different ways:
MacNutPie and YumYum "POP" like bucking
bronchos while Calvin and the others simply
become airborn, turn in mid-air, then abruptly
switch direction, popcorn again, and twirl about
before taking off again - FULL SPEED AHEAD!

The main way to keep a piggie airborne is space
to run, exercise, explore, socialize with one another,
forage for hidden treats, zip through cardboard boxes
with lots of doors cut out, and simply have enough
space, socializing, and enrichment to FLY!

Despite Calvin and YumYum both having degenerative
bone disease, they are still POPPING and everyone
stops whatever they are doing to witness the miracle
of pigs in pain, skeletons turned to glass and/or fusing,
yet capable of JOY, JOY, and more JOY!

Mom loves us so much because she says we have taught
her that being sick don't mean ya can't have lots o'fun!
