Raj Napping With Open Eyes

Yesterday we saw the funniest thing EVAH! Can't remember who it was - OH! - had to be Calvin, that's right. Not only was he sleeping with his eyes open, he must have been dreaming about eating, because mom and me watched him chewing and chewing his little mouth just going like a mile a minute. It was hilarious! Mom asked, "YumYum, what do you suppose he is eating in his dreams?"

"With Calvin, who knows?" I told her, but we had to stifle the giggles to avoid waking him up from his Dream Picnic! Raj just likes to show off his foot, and how it's bi-colored like his lower lip. We have posted lots of pics of his famous lip and foot before, but Calvin's Picnic reminded us how much fun we can have watching piggies...even when we sleep we is SO COOL!

Whatcom Falls Bridge

We have learned to live downtown pretty well, even though it's a highly different lifestyle from when we lived a walk down forest paths to Whatcom Creek, waterfalls, and our barred owls, perched invisibly upon branches overhanging the water.

There are still times when we yearn for the sound of crashing, glacier-fed waterfalls...
no other sound interrupting prayer and meditation. This is one of those times.

Raj, Don't Tell Anybody What We Say Behind Her Back!

Raj: "Gimme, Gimme, share, or just GIMME!"
Taj: "Raj, you pretty fo'sho, but a whole lotta crazy INSIDE IT! You can't blog about
the things we call mom behind her back, especially the Abby-thingy! Then she'll KNOW!
Raj: "True dat, 'bout the pretty! The guinea pig magazine from England featured
Coronets like me this  month, with just a perfect whorl atop  my head and long, feathery
fur-feathers draping in perfect coloration. They also described our humility about
our beauty as one of our more desirable characteristics, Raj. Now, GIMME!"
Taj: "My top notch is notorious at the vet and they love my chocolate brown
color! You got NUTTIN' ON ME, MY BRO!"
Raj: "I doesn't get how we can be real brothers yet two completely different breeds.
Like, HUH?"
Taj: "Yeah, sometimes I look at you and - HEY, GIMME BACK THAT LETTUCE!"

And so, as siblings bicker, I take the opportunity to post this scene from
"Young Frankenstein" sent by our very own ConniElfPie describing the
Who-What-When-Where-Why & HOW of mom.

Put your giggle hat on.

Police to investigate flooding deaths of nearly 100 animals at Petco - CNN.com

Police to investigate flooding deaths of nearly 100 animals at Petco - CNN.com

We are grief-stricken because had Petco management responded seriously to
numerous flood warnings issued in advance, this could have been prevented.
We little ones bred and sold at "Big Box" chain stores live there in cruel,
unhealthy conditions and customers are not educated about the special needs
we have. Which are many and should be conveyed to any potential "buyers"
of guinea pigs, ferrets, rats, sugar gliders, and all "exotics" bred and sold
purely for one thing and one thing only: PROFIT. These stores will eagerly
sell you a guinea pig and just as eagerly sell cages that are so small they
become prisons, toys which are dangerous, food which is toxic, "treats"
which are toxic, and customers are not aware of how we cannot produce
our own Vitamin C, how to supplement it, how much time we need to
run around OUTSIDE our cages (2 hours/daily is recommended) and
these stores continue to sell toxic litter bedding along with trash which
only shortens our lives at the expense of higher profit. A store in B'ham
actually sells cages which are too small yet include this sign: "Free guinea
pig with purchase of cage."

We are encouraged by so many new blogs and websites striving and
dedicated to enlightening the public about how special we are and how
much time, energy, and money it REALLY TAKES to give us the quality
of life we are entitled to.

Thank you, we are sad tonight.

Guinea Pig Welfare » Ten Years of Reading Guinea Pig Rescue.

From a Rescue in the U.K where they appear to take us more
seriously than in the U.S. where, sadly, many of our brothers
and sisters just perished in a Petco due to poor flood response
by the company. We are not happy about the disregard out
culture places on our value, but reading articles and sites
like this give us hope.

What Is Work?

Today mom had a big, long list of "things to do" and she didn't do them. Having only found out about the celebration at the guinea pig farm store yesterday, there was little time to prepare for the debut of our card line. What was required was focus, determination, and dedication to complete one task.

She didn't.

She took care of us instead.

I am still not drinking enough. But I am drinking a little. So, instead of taking me to the vet, she called to find out if we could try out something she saw someone do on the Internet with her sick piggie, which was to give it fresh, organic carrot juice. The vet said sure, give it a try. So, she got carrot juice. She drank hers. I haven't touched mine yet.

She let us all out on Runabout this morning too, instead of at bedtime when
she is too tired to play with us. We played together.

Then Taj did what only Taj can do. He escaped when mom didn't notice. So she had to look everywhere to find him and did, Eventually! (Good One, lil'buddy!)

Next, we all turned into the pickiest eaters, just to draw her out a little more. You see, she can make cards of us or she can spend time with us. We prefer the latter. So, when she brought the parsley we love (also for the Vitamin C) some of us chowed down, some of us looked at her with disdain. So, she brought out fresh spinach. Some of us chowed down, some of looked at her with disdain. So, she chopped up what remained of our purple cabbage and offered that. Some of us...well, you get the picture.

And don't forget, Taj escaped! So, she spent the entire morning with us, went out for the carrot juice, roamed the streets running into people she knew, and finally returned home tired and determined not to stress out. What was more important? Us? Or cards of us? She chose US and we think she chose right.

The past week has been horribly emotional for personal reasons and today was the first day where even the faintest flicker of normality existed, and - as we all know - there is 9/11, which mom is trying to approach without becoming over-emotional. All week, the Homeland Insecurity Helo we got for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver flew LOW (very, very low) practicing or searching; fast, grey gunboats  whizzed across the water; sleek, white-and-orange Coast Guard boats patrolled the Bay...and although this was our first week of summer and everyone feigned "mellow" once temps finally hit 80 degrees, there remained an unmistakably subtle vibration of a city under heavy surveillance. A very small city. Still, we are the first port south of the Canadian border and one terrorist had already been caught coming in from Canada on a ferry a few years ago...
so, mom chose us, the real us. Didn't make cards of us, simply chose us.

If I do have cancer, cards aren't going to save me. Nor will carrot juice. But knowing mom put me first will. And it will save her, too, if I haven't long to live. Knowing she chose me, us, is what 9/11 means here: choosing to cherish what we do have instead of seeking what we don't.

Loving today those who may not be with us tomorrow, even if that turns out to be me. Especially if that turns out to be me.

Cards will be made but they can wait. Magazines and calendars can wait.
"Doing" can wait. We come first. Love comes first.

Maybe I'll try some of that carrot juice so I can pee on mom when she picks me up for love later.

YumYum loves Ya!

Honoring PandaPig, Founder of Our Sanctuary

PandaPig hard at work blogging about the goings-on here while we still lived at the wildlife refuge...
PandaPig was our first rescue, was adopted by Chai the Bengal Cat, and the two welcomed me from when I was still a wee pup, then we were gifted Bear the Beaver Pig, and many more...
PandaPig and Bear the Beaver Pig passed away within days of one another from cancer, but not before making sure the Sanctuary was created to sustain itself by inviting in new rescues and appointing me to succeed him as official Blog editor. I miss PandaPig. Mom never stops missing him, and Bear, and Erica: She discovered an important lesson from us BuddhaPigs: while she once thought she was saving us, in the end it was PandaPig and we who save her.

Guinea Pig Cards to Make Their Debut!

^^^Check Out Our Little Town of Bellingham^^^Just two blocks from home!

"We cannot all do great things, but we can do small things with great love."
~ Mother Teresa

These are the neighborly folk who have been providing our Sanctuary with "special needs" piggies for years! People come in and "dump" unwanted, neglected, unsocialized, sick, and dying piggies, then leave. If the animals are not sellable, if the store cannot profit from their sale due to their age, poor health, or special needs, they come here! As we welcome them to their new forever home, some live long lives and some arrive as hospice piggies, but one thing is for sure: no piggie leaves for the Rainbow Bridge before receiving the comfort that he or she has been loved and cherished unconditionally, perhaps for the very first time
in their short lives.

Mom gonna (unless we at the vet all day tomorrow) get those cards together for this and sell 'em so we can get new cuddle cups, lots more hay, and toys!

We are going to celebrate the tenth anniversary of 9/11 with love, hope, compassion, and optimistic prayers for peace through selfless service;
honoring those heroes whose sacrifice we will never forget and can never repay.

Whadda-Whadda-WHAT?!

Mom is such a snitch! She called the vet again, alarmed that I have not been drinking. Summer arrived here this week and it finally got up in the 80's and my water bottle remained full. She also asked the vet for more prednisone cream to rub on my ears for pain. When we tapered off it, my fusing spine really ached me.

The pharmacist cautioned mom: "Now, you know to wear rubber gloves when applying this, right?"
She supposed to wear them to keep the pred from soaking into her own skin. But mom brightened and
replied, "Oh, no, I would never wear gloves, me lurves me my prednisone!" All this is just a sham for mom to bootleg pred for h'self! That what it is so don't believe a word she says about me being sick, it about her need for steroids iz what this is. (But the pharmacy asked mom for a photo of me for their pet patient photo board! I is a Celebrity everywhere!)

Tomorrow the vet will call and let mom know whether or not to take me to the hospital. Last time the techs hurt my back so bad trimming my nails, I don't wanna go back. Mom will do my nails now, but they is still talking about that stupis cancer thing and it makin' me MAD!

Not to mention it turns mom into a moronic version of a nervous wreck. And so it goes...

Except for very brief moments, mom pretty much offline now for a number of truly compelling reasons...(uh-Huh) so she "out of the loop" what happening wid everyMODy...and people are asking for pics of us for calendars to raise money for guinea pig rescues, magazine articles, and on Saturday the Farm Feed store who "gifted" most of us to mom is celebrating their centennial...ten years late due to it being on 9/11, so they waited a decade, and mom gonna go introduce her card line of us to raise money for our insatiable appetites and other supplies. And so forth...so if you don't hear from us, it cause mom lost her mind and nobuddy found it yet.

That my story and I'm stickin' to it!

YumYum has left the building.

Not really. I'm about to be let out on Runabout and not gonna let mom capture me, either, gonna be a long night for that Two-Legged Snitch!
